Like many people, songs end up linked with certain memories and emotions – I’ve been very aware of that this week, and thought I might name a few. Some morbid, some great, some confusing… see what you think.
‘All that she wants’ by Ace of Bass - from a particular secondary school relationship that wasn’t and lots of laughs with a good friend.
‘Spirit in the Sky’ – from my sisters death in 1997 and resulting processes. Also randomly, I was listening to “Just the one” by the Levelers when she died. Nice.
‘God, You’re my God’ by delirious - lots of laughs over the years with Nicky, and memories of ‘Expressions’ Christian event in Cambridge (not that it was played there!)
Smash Hit by All Star United – and that whole album… from when I became a Christian in 1997. A very Christ-centred, funky, poppy album.
If You’ll Let me Love You by Smalltown Poets - an interesting memory from working down in Rowledg, Farnham. No major links – just a song that totally stuck in my mind from that time and my second or third Christian Album purchased.
‘My Beloved Monster’ and various other shrek songs – from the early days of flirting, and going out with, with Em.
‘Must Get Out’ by Marroon 5 and ‘Dare You to Move’ by Switchfoot - from adjusting to the idea of moving from my job in Drumchapel and loving a schoolwork placement in Crieff.
Blessed be Your Name – by Matt Redman – Was the song I sang at the back of worship just having heard that my grandmother had passed away.
‘Just like a star’ by Corrin Baeley Rae - from Margaret Wood’s death and the journey back from the funeral. I still cant hear this one without weeping like a baby!
LeeLand - “Sound of Melodies” from last years LM2a SU Camp – awesome memories, and a great time. Interestingly, Daniel Bedingfield “If you’re the one” and ‘Is this the way to Amarillo’ From Camp in my last year at ICC. Camps always get tracks associated with them – perhaps because of the snoring they often cover up as i fall asleep… or because working on residential s makes me feel so alive – or so grieved when they end!
‘All I Want is You’ by Barry Louis Polisar (from the Juno Soundtrack) links to recent relationship events… enough said.
This week
…Em and I got lost in Glasgow for 2 hours because of roadworks
…and had a great evening with friends at a church ceilidh
…discovered a young person I work with has been placed in a secure unit
…was with another young person as he became a Christian at an SU event
…found out a friend/collegue’s dad is getting death threats!
Its been a mixed week.
Again.
I’m a serial blog abandoner. I hope to be more regular, again… I suspect i’ll fail. But I’ll try :-)
People are often unreasonable, Illogical,
and self-centered;
Forgive them anyway.
If you are kind, people may accuse you
of selfish, ulterior motives;
Be kind anyway.
If you are successful,You will win some
false friends and some true enemies;
Succeed anyway.
If you are honest and frank,
people may cheat you;
Be honest and frank anyway.
What you spend years building,
someone could destroy overnight;
Build anyway.
If you find serenity and happiness,
they may be jealous;
Be happy anyway.
The good you do today,
people will often forget tomorrow;
Do good anyway.
Give the world the best you have,
and it may never be enough;
Give the world the best you have anyway.
You see, in the final analysis,
it is between you and God;
It was never between you and them anyway.
Doctor Who was amazing tonight. I’ve become a bit of an addict over the past 12 weeks…
Martha Jones is no more? Jack is The Face of Boe? The Master’s gone? (??), The Doctor, again, left in the ‘I’m all alone and no-one understands me’ state?
As amatuer critics go, I’d say that there was some amazing acting in this episode. Very cool. Honestly, don’t believe me, watch the series yourself. And did anyone else wonder if the story was supposed to have as much of a religious tone as it did?
On a different note, i’m writing this from Perth. Em’s in her bed after a really nice afternoon of watching The Secret Garden, having a nice dinner and then getting right in to some more TV in the form of the Doctor.
Oooh its nice to relax. I’ve got a really weird week ahead of me in the form of the first week of our summer programme. One word? Exciting and scary. I need two – they’re so linked!
